A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instruction stored in its own memory, that can accept data(input), process the data according to specified rules(process), produce result (output), and store the result(storage) for future use.

 

Computer perform their basic operation like input process, output and storage. These operations comprise the information processing cycle.

Collectively, these information process data into information and store it for future use. A computer derives its power from its capability to perform the information processing cycle with amazing speed. For a computer to perform operation, it must be given a detailed set of instruction that tells it what exactly to do. All computer processing requires data.

 

 

DATA: -

                            Data is collection of unprocessed items, which can include text, numbers, images, audio and video. Computer manipulate data to create information.

INFORMATION: -

           Information conveys meaning and it is useful to people. During the output operation, the information has been created and put into some form such as printed report.

                         The Components of a Computer

The six primary component of a computer are input devices, the processor, output devices, storage devices, and communication devices.

 

INPUT DEVICES: -

                                An input device is any hardware component that allows you to enter data and instruction into a computer. The two primary input devices are keyboard and mouse.

A Keyboard is an input device that contain keys users press to enter data and instruction into the computer. All desktop computer keyboards have a typing area that include the letters of the alphabet, numbers and other basic keys.

Mouse is a pointing device and with it user control the movement of the pointer, which is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves a pointing device.

There are many other input and mobile devices such as smart phones and PDAs, and some notebook computers, such as tablet PCs, use a variety of alternatives for entering data and instructions.

 

                                                               

 

 

SYSTEM UNIT: -

                      The system unit is a case that contain electronic components of the computer used to process data. The motherboard, sometimes called a system board, is the main circuit board of the system unit.

The processor, also call the central processing unit(CPU), interprets and carries the basic information that operate a computer.

Memory consists of electronic components that store instruction waiting to be executed and data needed by those instructions. Most memory keeps data and instructions temporarily, which means its contents are erased when computer is shut off.

OUTPUT DEVICES: -

Output devices are hardware components that convey information to one or more people. Commonly used output devices include display devices, speakers, headphones and data projector. When computer is used for processing tasks such as creating documents, the two output devices widely used are the printer and a display device.

 

 

 

STORAGE DEVICES:

A storage device is the computer hardware that records and/or retrieve items to form storage media. A storage medium is the physical material on which a computer keeps data, instructions and information. Three common types of storage media are hard disks, flash media and optical disks.

                                           COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Software is also called a program consists of a series of related instructions, organized for a common purpose that tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them. Installing is the process of adding software to a computer and installing is the process of removing a program. Software can be divided into two categories:

•         SYSTEM SOFTWARE

•         APPLICATION SOFTWARE

SYSTEM SOFTWARE: -

System software consist of programs that control the operations of the computer and its devices. Two types of system software are operating system and utility programs.

An operating system is a set of programs that coordinates all the activities among computer hardware devices. It provides a means for users to communicate with the computer and other software.

A utility program allows a user to perform maintenance –type tasks usually related to managing a computer, its devices or its programs.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE: -

Application software consists of programs designed to make users more productive and /or assist them with personal tasks. These include personal information management, note taking, project management, accounting, document management.

Hardware=

                         Hardware is physical parts of computer that cause processing of data. Hardware cannot perform any task without software. Hardware can be seen and touched. Hardware is repaired in case of problem. Hardware is replaced if the problem is not solved

 

USES OF A COMPUTERS

Computers are playing a vital role in almost every field and making our tasks more manageable. Computers were only used to perform complex numerical calculations in a previous time, but they have reached too far and now perform many different roles. They are now performing diverse set functions from complicated calculations to generating business reports, bill generation to education, programming or development to entertainment.

Because of their characteristic and powerful functionalities, computers are used in various fields such as home, business, science, government, health and medical, education, industry, banking, entertainment, training, arts, sports, robotics, safety and security, publishing, weather forecasting and communication.
